Why? Many young disabled people are subjected to disability hate crime, that is senseless and cruel so something was needed to address this issue and raise self esteem.
How? Young people directly affected by disability hate crime joined together to address the effects of cyber bullying through the creation of posters, bookmarks and animations that were disseminated throughout the community. The young people worked together to decide what messages they wanted to send out, what forms of cyber bullying to tackle, how to be safe using social media and how to distribute the work.
Benefits? The young people talked about bullying and its negative effects, learnt how to see designs through to final ideas through development of their skills in photography, computer graphics, and digital manipulation. Confidence grew as the young people gained knowledge, shared their ideas and passed this on to others. Parents were also invited into the school to learn more about cyber bullying and the potential hazzards of social media to help their children be safe on the internet.
